The Boss
Dr. Jim Chalmers
Treasurer (Labor Party)
The Gig: The main guy writing the national budget, trying to keep inflation from eating our collective lunch, and currently pushing through massive tax reforms.
The Resume: He’s rocking a PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the Australian National University (ANU), literally writing his thesis on Paul Keating’s time as Prime Minister. He also has a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Commerce (Communications). Before entering parliament himself, he was the Chief of Staff to former Treasurer Wayne Swan during the chaotic 2008 Global Financial Crisis.
Is He Actually Qualified? Extremely, but in a very specific way. Chalmers isn't an academic economist; he is a political economist. He doesn't just look at a spreadsheet; he looks at how the numbers on that spreadsheet will play out in the media and the polls. His real-world apprenticeship during the GFC means he has seen the absolute worst-case scenarios play out from the inside. Globally, his background in international relations gives him a solid footing for navigating global trade tensions. He knows how the Treasury machine works better than almost anyone.
