Think Tanks

Think Tanks
(And why they're thinking so hard)

Wait, what is a Think Tank?

Imagine a book club, but instead of reading fantasy novels, everyone reads boring government statistics. Then, they write long essays telling the government how to run the country.

Basically, a think tank is an organization full of super-nerds (economists, scientists, and former politicians) who get paid to come up with ideas. Some lean Left, some lean Right, and some sit right in the Centre trying not to offend anyone.

The Political Pizza Scale πŸ•

  • Left-Wing: Believes everyone should get an equal slice of pizza, even if we have to tax the rich guy to buy it.
  • Right-Wing: Believes you should buy your own pizza, keep all the slices, and the government shouldn't tell you what toppings to get.
  • Centre: Wants to study the pizza for three years and write a 400-page report on its cheese density.
The Left ⬅️
🐒

The Fabian Society

Location: UK

Their Vibe:

Slow, steady, and occasionally wearing tweed.

What's their deal?

Founded in 1884, they are the granddaddies of the British Left. They want more equality and better public services, but they prefer gradual reform over throwing bricks.

Dry Joke Alert:

Their actual strategy is "socialism, but make it incredibly slow and polite so nobody notices until it's done."

πŸ“ˆ

Center for American Progress

Location: USA

Their Vibe:

Trying to out-spreadsheet the centrists, but with way more recycling bins.

What's their deal?

A massive progressive machine. They want green energy, universal healthcare, and fair wages. They spend all day churning out detailed policies for Democratic politicians.

Dry Joke Alert:

They spend 80% of their time writing 200-page plans to save the planet, and 20% crying when politicians only read the headline.

πŸ‘·

Economic Policy Institute

Location: USA

Their Vibe:

The person at the party reminding everyone who made the snacks and demanding they get paid double.

What's their deal?

Focused almost entirely on the working class. If a new government rule doesn't help unions, raise wages, or give workers more power, they absolutely hate it.

Dry Joke Alert:

Their absolute worst nightmare is a highly efficient factory robot that doesn't demand a 45-minute lunch break.

The Centre βš–οΈ
πŸ€“

Brookings Institution

Location: USA

Their Vibe:

"Um, actually, if you look at the raw data..."

What's their deal?

The ultimate centrist heavyweight. They pride themselves on being non-partisan (not picking sides). They just want everyone to calm down and look at a spreadsheet.

Dry Joke Alert:

If "Hall Monitor" was a multi-million dollar organization, it would be Brookings. They exist to tell politicians their ideas are statistically improbable.

β˜•

Chatham House

Location: UK

Their Vibe:

Extremely polite people discussing the literal apocalypse over tea.

What's their deal?

Obsessed with international affairs. Famous for the "Chatham House Rule": you can quote what was said at their meetings, but you can't reveal WHO said it. It's high-level professional gossip.

Dry Joke Alert:

If a meteor was hurtling toward Earth, they would immediately host an anonymous panel discussion on how it affects the global price of biscuits.

πŸ“Š

Pew Research Center

Location: USA

Their Vibe:

The friend who constantly posts Twitter polls to decide where to eat.

What's their deal?

They call themselves a "fact tank." They refuse to take policy positions; they literally just count things and do surveys. Who likes the President? Do teens use TikTok? Pew knows.

Dry Joke Alert:

If you ask them for directions, they won't tell you the way, but they will publish a chart showing that 65% of people are also currently lost.

➑️ The Right
πŸ¦…

The Heritage Foundation

Location: USA

Their Vibe:

Free markets, free speech, and intense eagle noises.

What's their deal?

One of the most powerful conservative groups in the world. Their main goals are letting businesses do their thing without government interference, traditional values, and a strong military.

Dry Joke Alert:

They genuinely believe the government is the source of all your problems, which is why they work tirelessly to put their friends in charge of it.

πŸ—½

Cato Institute

Location: USA

Their Vibe:

"Don't tell me what to do," but written as a 500-page academic thesis.

What's their deal?

They are Libertarians. This means they are super right-wing on money (no taxes! no rules!) but left-wing on personal stuff (the government shouldn't tell you how to live). Freedom to the max!

Dry Joke Alert:

They dream of a beautiful utopian future where you can legally buy a military tank on Amazon without paying a single cent in sales tax.

🎩

Adam Smith Institute

Location: UK

Their Vibe:

Wants to sell your school cafeteria to the highest bidder to make the nuggets crispier.

What's their deal?

Named after the famous 'father of economics', they believe that competition and capitalism can solve literally every single problem on Earth if the government just steps out of the way.

Dry Joke Alert:

If you have a problem, their solution is to privatize it. Got a leaky roof? Privatize the concept of rain. Problem solved.
